*The following is a fun review of a book I didn’t care for.
Uprooted by Naomi Novik is a horror fantasy book with two antagonists, one a creeper that kidnaps young girls, and Regan MacNeil from The Exorcist in oak trees. It revolves around an evil wizard named Dragon that extorts a village into giving him a young 17-year-old girl every 10 years as a maid/slave. The girls that live in this village that are of right age go through their entire life with the weight that they might be chosen to live in this guy’s attic making him food which he doesn’t even need because he can cast a spell that creates feasts. Oh yeah, he is 150 years older than these girls but looks like Edward Cullen.
Agnieszka is the girl that is chosen because she has the amazing characterization of a girl that gets dirty a lot and happens to have innate magical powers. She is verbally abused non-stop by Dragon and can never do anything right. Dragon yells at her for getting dirty often and teaches her a way to cast magic on her clothes to wear tight corset ballroom gowns to make Dragon happy. With Dragon’s negging, emotional manipulation, and along with Stockhold syndrome, Agnishka falls in love with this creeper. Things get really bad when possessed plants start killing everything and corrupting animals and people, turning the book into The Conjuring 3. Poor Agnysca must battle her abusive boyfriend and weeds trying to kill her friends.
This was a terrifying book. Dragon is one of the best emotionally manipulating characters I’ve ever read and on par with Hannibal Lector. Dragon’s reaction to a Prince trying to rape Agnishye is to give the Prince a memory of them having a good time. Dragon even has a room in his basement where the previous owner kept his wife trapped. The Wood is this crazy malevolent spirit that is just really mad that she didn’t get the role in Princess Mononoke that the evil wood spirit got in that movie.
As a horror fantasy book, I give this book a 4 out of 5. As a fantasy book that really needed the author to become more aware of what she was writing, 2 out of 5.
*I think that Dragon is actually Mr. Plinkett from the Red Letter Media reviews.
