Two of my favorite authors, George R.R. Martin & Robin Hobb have a chat with their editor Jane Johnson at an event hosted by HarperVoyager UK. The video is sponsored by blinkBox Books.
When I was a teenager I read through the first 5 Wheel of Time books and I absolutely loved them. About 4 years ago I reread the first 5 again and finally this year I made the decision that I was going to finish the series during 2014. It gave me a reading goal that I looked forward to completing and I fell back in love with the fantasy genre more so that I have ever had before.
15 books, 12,000 pages later, an average of 800 pages per book, I finally finished the journey today. I could not be more satisfied with the ending of A Wheel of Time with A Memory of Light. The amount of action was immense. Something labeled The Last Battle did not disappoint. Almost the entire book was one huge continent wide battle against the Shadow. The Last Battle at the Fields of Merrilor chapter was one huge 200 page chapter that was the most intense battle of any book I’ve read so far. It was glorious and had everything one could hope for in an epic fantasy battle.
The sacrifices made by characters that I love gave me an emotional reaction and the victories that were made had me reacting physically in joy. Sanderson gave an amazing ending to my favorite series of books that would make Robert Jordan proud. I am so glad that the series was finished and that Sanderson was the man picked to write the ending.
As a series, even though it is my favorite, there are flaws. Winter’s Heart and Crossroads of Twilight were not that great. They really brought down the quality of the entire series. However, it did not ruin it enough to make it fall short with its greatness. I would give the series itself a solid 4.5 stars. I still will encourage people to read it but I will probably warn them.
It was a great journey this year and 2014 will always be the year of Wheel of Time for me. To accomplish a personal goal like this is a big deal for me too.
