When I started these Zane Halloway novellas by P.T. Hylton I never expected him to connect the novellas together into one large story. I thought it was going to be more episodic and less serial but I am happy to say that I think the serial take is why I’m enjoying them so much. Even though each novella has its own story, they all relate to each other. As I read each novella the world building gets more interesting and complex. I liked what he did with the Elves in this novella and I think it’s a fresh approach to a race that has been done often in fantasy.
This novella in the overall story has Zane and Lily going after a very powerful tangle within the Elven district behind the walls. The history of this world and the complexities of the magic system get expanded in this volume. I enjoyed reading it and I look forward to the last 3 in the series. I think that this volume suffers some by being a “middle volume” in the overall story with it being a mostly building up and world building centered volume, but it was still a great and necessary read in the overall story.
If you enjoy secret assassin organizations, rogues for hire, or just a good ol’ assassin teacher and student relationship, then give these novellas a try. They are quick reads and a lot of fun.
