This is just a small update. I am currently in the process of reading House of Chains by Steven Erikson. I am about half way done and greatly enjoying it. I always have a bit of an issue during the first half of Malazan books because it is a lot of reintroducing of the characters or adding new characters. Because of that, the first halves of each Malazan book is a bit of a difficult read for me at times. There are so many natural places to stop reading because of the point of view shifts and I find myself putting the book down naturally. Once I get caught up with what everyone is doing, I am able to get completely engrossed in the story.
I am thinking about reading the rest of the books in order. I made a mistake of taking a long break between book 2 and 3. I also made a mistake of taking a long break between 3 and 4. I’m thinking about just reading them all back to back. Not only will this complete my goal for reading the entire series this year, I will probably enjoy the process more.
The problem with this is that my site and booktube channel would suffer tremendously. My reviews would basically only be Malazan books and there would not be more diversity. On the other hand, if I really want to read the entire series this year, this is what I will have to do.
What do I think of Malazan Book of the Fallen?
I think it is an ingenious work of fantasy fiction. It is the best example of mystery world building in a fantasy book I have ever come across. Erikson hides so many details about this world and its characters from the reader. Most authors would just completely fail at not telling the reader things but Erikson is able to make that mystery the center of the entire series.
